21 Cards Rummy — also called Marriage or Paplu — is a rummy variant for 2 to 5 players using three 52-card decks, with 21 cards dealt to each player instead of 13. Instead of only sequences and sets, you also build dublees (a pair of the same rank and suit) and tunnelas (three of the same rank and suit), and you only see the hidden joker after showing three pure sequences or sets. The exact number of dublees needed, the joker types used and the scoring table all vary by app and table, so check the rules screen before you play.

What Is 21 Cards Rummy (Marriage)?

21 Cards Rummy is a rummy variant popular in Punjabi and Nepali households, known by several names: Marriage, Marriage Rummy, Paplu, or simply 21 Cards. It isn't a version of the 13-card Indian rummy most real-money apps run — it's a separate game with its own deal size, its own melds, and its own way of revealing the joker, played mostly casually among friends and family rather than at paid tables.

Setup: Players, Decks and the Deal

Players2 to 5
Decks used3 standard decks shuffled together
JokersVaries: some versions include a printed joker in each deck, others use no printed joker and cut one card from the pile as the wild instead

With three decks and up to five players taking 21 cards each, a large pile stays in the draw stack — expect a longer game than 13-card rummy.

Key Terms: Dublee, Tunnela and Pure Sequence

  • Dublee: a pair of cards with the same rank and the same suit (for example, two 7♥).
  • Tunnela: three cards with the same rank and the same suit (three 7♥, which needs two decks to supply).
  • Trial (set): three cards of the same rank in three different suits — the same idea as a set in 13-card rummy.
  • Pure sequence: three or more consecutive cards of the same suit with no joker used, same definition as in 13-card rummy.

How a Hand Is Won: Two Stages

A hand runs in two stages. First, before anyone can see the hidden joker (often called the maal), each player needs three pure sequences or sets on the table. Once a player has shown those, they can look at the joker card and start using it as a wild in their melds.

Second, after seeing the joker, the game is won by building a set number of dublees — commonly seven, though some tables and apps ask for eight — followed by one final meld to close the hand. Jokers typically can't be used to complete a dublee or tunnela, since those melds are defined by matching the same suit and rank exactly.

The dublee count, whether jokers can substitute, and how ties are broken are the three rules that differ most between apps and households. Agree on them before the first deal.

Scoring in 21 Cards Rummy

One commonly used point table (apps and house rules vary)
Tunnela5
Double tunnela15
Triple tunnela55
Hadn't shown 3 pure sequences/sets before the hand endedHigher flat penalty than a player who had
Seen the joker but didn't finishSmaller flat penalty than a player who never saw it

Treat the numbers above as illustrative rather than universal: unlike 13-card rummy's points calculation, which is fairly standardised across apps, 21 Cards Rummy scoring tables differ meaningfully by platform.

Where People Play It, and the Real-Money Rules

21 Cards Rummy is played mostly offline, at home, and on a handful of apps that specialise in it rather than on the mainstream 13-card rummy platforms covered in our best rummy apps comparison. Since India's 2025 Online Gaming Act, real-money online rummy of any format is prohibited nationwide — see the rummy legal states guide for the current rules by state. Free and practice tables aren't affected.

21 Cards Rummy: FAQ

What is 21 cards rummy also called?

Marriage, Marriage Rummy, or Paplu, depending on the region and app.

How many decks does 21 cards rummy use?

Three standard 52-card decks shuffled together, so each of up to 5 players can be dealt 21 cards.

What is a dublee in rummy?

A pair of cards with the same rank and the same suit, for example two 9♠. It's a meld unique to 21 Cards Rummy, not used in 13-card rummy.

What is a tunnela?

Three cards with the same rank and the same suit. Since a standard deck has only one of each card, a tunnela needs cards from two of the three decks in play.

How many dublees do you need to see the joker in 21 cards rummy?

Rules vary — commonly seven, sometimes eight. Checking the rules screen or agreeing with the table before the deal avoids disputes mid-game.

Is 21 cards rummy the same as 13-card Indian rummy?

No. It's a separate variant with a different deal size, three decks instead of one or two, and extra meld types (dublees and tunnelas) that 13-card rummy doesn't use.

Can I play 21 cards rummy for real money in India?

No. India's 2025 Online Gaming Act prohibits real-money online rummy in every format nationwide. Free and practice versions are unaffected.
