Indian rummy is played with two decks plus jokers. Each player gets 13 cards, draws and discards one card per turn, and tries to arrange all 13 into valid sequences and sets. A valid declaration needs at least two sequences, one of them pure (no joker standing in). Unmatched cards count against you: Aces and face cards 10 points, number cards face value, jokers zero. Apps offer points, pool and deals formats; real-money online rummy is prohibited in India since the 2025 Online Gaming Act.

How to Play Rummy: 13-Card Indian Rummy Step by Step

Indian rummy is played with two standard decks plus printed jokers, and one rank is picked at random each deal to be the wild joker. Each player is dealt 13 cards, and the goal is to arrange all of them into valid sequences and sets before anyone else does.

  1. Draw a card each turn, from the closed deck or the open discard pile.
  2. Discard one card, keeping your hand at 13.
  3. Arrange your cards into sequences and sets as you go; apps let you group them on screen.
  4. Declare once every card is in a valid group, by discarding your last card and showing your groups.
  5. Meet the minimum: at least two sequences, at least one of them pure (no joker standing in).

The quickest way to learn it is to play a few hands: our free rummy practice table deals 13-card rummy against a bot in your browser, with virtual chips only, and groups your cards as you go.

Rummy Sequences, Sets and the Pure Sequence Rule

Pure Sequence3+ consecutive same-suit cards, no joker standing in5♠ 6♠ 7♠
Impure Sequence3+ consecutive same-suit cards with a joker filling a gap5♠ 6♠ Joker
Set3 or 4 cards of the same rank, all different suits9♠ 9♥ 9♦

The pure sequence is the rule beginners most often miss: without one, a declaration is invalid however good the rest of the hand looks. Our pure sequence guide has valid and invalid examples, including why K-A-2 doesn't count.

A worked example: with 4♥ 5♥ 6♥, 8♦ 8♣ 8♠, 2♠ 3♠ 4♠ and four unmatched cards, the hearts are a pure sequence, the three 8s are a set, and 2-3-4 of spades is a second sequence. That already meets the minimum of two sequences with one pure. The four remaining cards still have to form a valid group, or be swapped out over later turns, before you can declare.

Points Rummy vs Pool Rummy vs Deals Rummy

Points RummyOne deal; each point has a fixed value and losers are charged for unmatched cards.Quick games.
Pool RummyPoints add up across deals; reach 101 (or 201) and you're out. Last player left wins.Longer sessions, forgiving of one bad hand.
Deals RummyA fixed number of deals with chips; most chips at the end wins.A predictable session length.

Full rules for the two longer formats: pool rummy rules (101 and 201 pool, drops and rejoining) and deals rummy rules (2-deal and 3-deal games, how chips are settled).

Rummy Scoring in Brief

Ace, King, Queen, Jack10 each
2 to 10Face value
Jokers0
Maximum for one handUsually 80
First drop / middle drop (points rummy)Usually 20 / 40

Lower is better: the player who declares correctly scores zero. A worked example is in rummy points calculation.

Dropping a Weak Hand

If your opening 13 cards are too weak to arrange, you can "drop" before playing a card and take a small fixed penalty instead of risking a full count if someone else declares. A middle drop, after at least one turn but before declaring, costs more than a first drop, but still less than losing with an unmatched hand. Exact drop penalties vary by app, so check its rules screen.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Declaring with two sequences that both use jokers. Without a pure sequence the declaration is invalid, however low the point count looks.
  • Holding high-value cards (Aces and face cards) too long while chasing an unlikely sequence, which is costly if an opponent declares first.
  • Discarding a card that obviously helps the next player, without checking what they've been picking up from the open pile.
  • Not dropping a genuinely weak hand early, and taking a full-count penalty instead of a smaller drop penalty.

Rummy vs Teen Patti: Which Should You Play?

They reward different skills. Rummy is about planning and memory: tracking discards and reading what opponents collect gives skilled players a repeatable edge, which is why the Supreme Court treated it as a game of skill in 1968. Teen Patti is a betting game built on incomplete information and bluffing. If you enjoy planning, rummy will suit you; if you enjoy reading people, try the Teen Patti game guide. Smaller Rummy, Slot and Bingo Apps

Beyond the established names, our directory covers smaller rummy-branded apps: Rummy 91, Gold Rummy, Max Rummy, Joy Rummy, INR Rummy, Boss Rummy, Rummy 888, OK Rummy, Game Rummy and Love Rummy. Each page says plainly what we could and couldn't confirm about the app, since most have little public information beyond a name and a referral link.

Some apps in the same network are broader real-money gaming apps (Dhan Game, Jaiho 777, Club INR and Ind Club), and some are slot-, spin- or bingo-style apps that rely mostly on chance (Jaiho Slots, Spin Gold, Spin Winner, Slots Winner, Yes Spin and Bingo 101). Before installing any of them, run through our checklist for smaller real-money apps. Real-money online games are prohibited in India under the 2025 Online Gaming Act.

Rummy Game: Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play rummy?

Each player gets 13 cards. On your turn you draw one card and discard one, aiming to arrange all 13 into sequences and sets. You declare when every card is in a valid group, with at least two sequences, one of them pure.

What is a pure sequence and why does it matter?

Three or more consecutive cards of one suit with no joker standing in. You can't make a valid declaration without one, however good the rest of your hand is.

Can I win without two sequences?

No. Standard rules need at least two sequences, one of them pure. A hand of only sets, or only impure sequences, doesn't qualify.

Can I use more than one joker in a set or impure sequence?

Yes, as long as the group still works with the jokers filling the gaps. The pure sequence is the exception: it must contain no joker at all, however many you hold elsewhere.

What happens if I drop a hand?

You take a smaller fixed penalty instead of playing on. A first drop (before your first turn) is usually 20 points and a middle drop 40 in points rummy, both cheaper than losing with a full unmatched hand.

What's the difference between points, pool and deals rummy?

Points rummy is a single scored deal. Pool rummy adds points across deals until players reach 101 or 201 and are eliminated. Deals rummy plays a fixed number of deals with chips.

How are rummy points calculated?

Unmatched cards count against you: Aces and face cards 10 each, number cards their face value, jokers zero. A hand is usually capped at 80 points.

Is rummy a game of skill?

Indian courts have treated it as mainly skill since a 1968 Supreme Court ruling. For online play for money, though, the 2025 Act bans money games regardless of skill.

Is real-money rummy legal in India now?

No. The 2025 Online Gaming Act prohibits online money games, including rummy, and major operators paused cash games in August 2025. Free play is unaffected. General information, not legal advice.

Can I still withdraw my balance from rummy apps?

Some operators, including RummyCircle's parent Games24x7, kept withdrawals open when they paused paid games. Use only the app's official withdrawal section, never an agent.

Which rummy app should I choose?

For free play, prefer apps from named publishers with official store listings. Compare them in the table above and read our safety guides before installing.

Rummy kaise khelte hain?

Har khiladi ko 13 patte milte hain. Har baari ek patta uthaiye aur ek phenkiye, aur saare patton ko sequence aur set mein jamaiye. Kam se kam do sequence chahiye, jinme ek pure sequence (bina joker) hona zaroori hai.
