Teen Patti and poker both rank hands and let you win by having the best hand or by making everyone else fold, but they differ in seven important ways. Teen Patti deals three cards per player and no shared cards; Texas Hold'em, the most played poker game, gives two private cards and five shared ones. Teen Patti ranks a Sequence above a Color and a Trail above a Pure Sequence, the reverse of five-card poker's order. Its betting uses blind and seen play rather than poker's small and big blinds, and a hand usually ends in under a minute. Poker offers more decisions per hand, which gives skill more room; Teen Patti is quicker and simpler to learn first.

Cards Dealt and Hand Ranking

Both games use a standard 52-card deck. In Teen Patti you get three cards and that's your whole hand; nothing is shared. In Texas Hold'em you get two cards and build your best five-card hand from those plus five community cards everyone shares. That one change explains most of the ranking differences, because hand rarity depends on how many cards you hold.

How rare each hand type is in each game
Straight flush / Pure Sequence48 (0.217%)40 (0.0015%)
Three of a kind / Trail52 (0.235%)54,912 (2.11%)
Straight / Sequence720 (3.26%)10,200 (0.39%)
Flush / Color1,096 (4.96%)5,108 (0.20%)
One pair / Pair3,744 (16.94%)1,098,240 (42.3%)

With five cards, a flush is rarer than a straight, so poker ranks the flush higher. With three cards it's the other way round (720 sequences against 1,096 colors), so Teen Patti ranks the Sequence higher. See the full Teen Patti sequence chart for every hand.

Why a Trail Beats a Pure Sequence in Teen Patti

In five-card poker the straight flush is by far the rarest hand (40 ways), so it sits at the top. In Teen Patti, the maths is much closer: 48 Pure Sequences against 52 Trails. Strictly by rarity, the Pure Sequence should win, and the casino game Three Card Poker does rank its straight flush above three of a kind. Teen Patti keeps the Trail on top by long-standing tradition, and every major app follows that order, so learn it as the rule rather than trying to derive it.

Betting: Blind and Seen vs Poker Blinds

Poker's "blinds" and Teen Patti's "blind" play share a word but not a meaning. In poker, the blinds are forced bets from the two players to the dealer's left, and everyone sees their cards. In Teen Patti, every player pays a boot, and then each one chooses whether to bet blind (without looking, at half the cost) or seen (after looking, at full cost). That choice is Teen Patti's main strategic lever; poker's equivalents are position and bet sizing across four rounds. See blind vs seen and the sideshow rules for the details.

Skill vs Luck in Each Game

Both games mix chance and decision-making, but in different proportions. A Teen Patti hand involves few decisions and ends quickly, so the cards decide most individual hands and skill shows only over many of them. Texas Hold'em spreads each hand over four betting rounds with new information arriving each time, which gives skilled players more chances to outplay weaker ones within a single hand. That's one reason poker is the game with a professional circuit.

Whether either counts as a "game of skill" in Indian law matters less than it used to: the 2025 Online Gaming Act bans real-money online games regardless of skill or chance. See is Teen Patti legal in India. General information, not legal advice.

Which Should an Indian Beginner Learn First?

Teen Patti, for most people. The rules fit on one page, a hand takes under a minute, you've probably already seen it played at Diwali, and the core skill (judging a three-card hand against the number of players left) carries over to poker later. Poker's extra depth is easier to appreciate once hand rankings and betting feel natural. Start with the Teen Patti game guide and try a few hands on our free practice table.

Teen Patti vs Three Card Poker

Three Card Poker, the casino table game, is the closest relative of Teen Patti: three cards each, and the same six hand types. But it's played against the dealer rather than other players, and it ranks hands strictly by rarity, so its straight flush beats three of a kind. Teen Patti is a game between players, with blind and seen betting, Shows and sideshows, and it keeps the Trail on top.

Bluffing in Teen Patti vs Poker

Bluffing works in both games, but differently. In Texas Hold'em, a bluff tells a story across four rounds as community cards appear, and it can be timed to cards that scare your opponent. In Teen Patti there are no new cards, so a bluff is mostly about betting pressure and the blind/seen signal: a player who looks and keeps raising is representing strength. Because a whole Teen Patti hand is decided by just three cards, bluffs against many opponents fail more often; see how to win at Teen Patti for why a bluff works best against one or two players.

How Many Players Each Game Suits

Cards used per hand3 per player, nothing shared2 per player plus 5 shared
Works heads-up (2 players)?Yes, but blind/seen tactics matter lessYes; heads-up is a popular format
Typical home settingFamily gatherings, festivalsFriends' game nights

Table size changes strategy in both games, but more sharply in Teen Patti: because nobody shares cards, every extra player is another independent hand you have to beat. A King-high hand is best about half the time against one opponent and only a few percent of the time against five.

Which Is Better for a Home Game?

For a mixed group, Teen Patti usually wins. Anyone can learn it in a few minutes, hands are quick so nobody waits long, and the blind and seen choice gives newcomers a fun decision from the first hand. Poker rewards a group that's willing to learn more rules and play longer hands. Many Indian families play Teen Patti at festivals precisely because it's light; see our Diwali family game guide for a ready-made setup.

Teen Patti vs Poker: FAQ

Is Teen Patti the same as poker?

No. It's often called Indian poker because both rank hands and allow bluffing, but Teen Patti uses three cards, a different hand order and blind/seen betting.

Why does Sequence beat Color in Teen Patti but not in poker?

Because rarity depends on the number of cards. With three cards there are 720 sequences and 1,096 colors, so the sequence is rarer; with five cards the flush is rarer.

Is Teen Patti easier than poker?

Yes, to learn. It has fewer rules, fewer decisions and much shorter hands. Poker has more depth, which also means a longer learning curve.

Does a Trail beat a straight flush?

In Teen Patti, yes: a Trail beats a Pure Sequence (the three-card straight flush). In five-card poker and in the casino game Three Card Poker, the straight flush ranks higher.

Which needs more skill, Teen Patti or poker?

Poker gives skill more room, because each hand has four betting rounds and new information. Teen Patti's skill shows mainly over many hands, in folding and blind/seen decisions.
